Re-reading SD AR states pemmican is pressed beef, as a child I always thought that was just another name for corned beef

I've always assumed that it was corned beef under an adventurous name. But I'm from the corned beef generation- have never actually come across pressed beef. I have, however, come across beef dried completely, until you have to break the fibres off with a hammer. Good chewing, if you can get a piece small enough to put in your mouth. Would that be pemmican? What is/was pressed beef like?
