Well if we are going to be strictly accurate the energy component of the water, due to gravity, either in head or velocity terms is used as the source of energy to lift - so to speak the water to the tank system using the ram. Like most humans, we understand the engineering long before we can put math to it.
We cannot judge the language of people past, it was their language not ours. If you read the books by Buchan you get a lot of racism, we still have racism it is just buried by a veneer of civilisation.
