English apples are just coming into season now. There are many which would have been available in the 1930's such as Discovery, Worcester Permain, Coxes Orange Pippin and Bramley to name a few.
Unfortunately the supermarkets usually sell foreign imports which have tough skins and are flavourless.

However I am fortunate that I have an old school friend who owns a vintage orchard near the Thames who can provide excellent apples. These would certainly have been similar to the ones available to the Swallows.
