I wonder how much of the geography of Ransome's lake was in his mind at the start of the series and how much he built up and added later as fresh stories were developed. He might have wished that he could reconfigure it a bit in later books. By the end of the series, the southern end was one of the few bits that hadn't been developed or explored.
