I went round Lanehead (with the Arthur Ransome Trust) a year or two ago when it was up for sale, and I did not find it dark and gloomy at all. In fact it seemed light and airy and one's spirits were uplifted by touring the rooms (some, admittedly, much altered). The garden was overgrown, and with a trimming and cutting of bushes the house would be even lighter and back to its late 19th century state. However, I did not see much of Beckfoot in it, apart from the feeling one gets in any pleasant lakeside house. For me, 'Beckfoot' has always been generic.
