Having recently read "The Collingwood" chapter, I feel that perhaps the attraction of Lanehead lay more in its occupants whom Ransome so admired (or fell in love with). By way of contrast, Taqui's wonderful piece in "In Aleppo Once" "Lanehead was like a magic spell. . . " is full of nostalgic affection.
Duncan makes a good point in that Beckfoot emerges book by book and only in PM is it, "The loveliest place in all the world."
It is interesting, that apart from the good number who favour Lanehead, there is no other front runner and I sometimes wonder if Ransome's "All the places can be found . . . " actually includes Beckfoot,
Perhaps you are right in separating the spirit and the fabric. As for the fabric, I have seen nowhere that looks better than Town Head near the foot of Windermere.
