Mike — I have always felt that until PM the Amazons were Ransome's puppets, present or absent according to the requirement of the plot and behaving in a manner the plot demanded. In SW, I think it very likely that he felt his readers would expect the Amazons back after WD and the simple map-making ploy would have been bland without the tension created by their presence, yet the result for me is that SW is not entirely satisfactory. Thank goodness for Bridget!!
At last in PM AR has become interested in Nancy the person behind the image. The result is unexpected.
Fans of Nancy would love the chapter "Nancy Blackett — champion of goodness" in Victor Watson's "Reading Series Fiction. "A girl of extraordinary kindness and sustained cheerful toughness," is his verdict on our heroine in PM and GN.
I am glad you have been converted!
