By English “public” ie private schools I had in mind schools like Eton which I think is not technically a “private” school and would come under the term “old endowed grammar school” used by Robert Hill, but which (apart from scholarships) are attended by those with rich parents!

Most of your previous Prime Ministers went to Eton (except for Churchill, who went to Harrow for his health), and to Oxford if they went to university. Margaret (Baroness) Thatcher went to Oxford too, but after going to the local grammar school as a day pupil, so marked a change from the previous governing elite.
