.... which is probably precisely why the sector in the UK is prefers the term "Independent School" rather than "Private School", which does indeed have a slightly different meaning. A child who has been "privately educationed" probably never went to school at all!

Eton is an "Independent School" and so describes itself. I have never seen it described as a "Private" school.

PS. In Scotland "Public School" has always meant "State School". But that's the Scots for you...
