John, you've scored a bulls-eye. I have found that at sailing events the 'sailing' third of TARS are happy talking 'sisterhooks' to each other all day. The landsmen are graciously offered a 'voyage' if we hang around long enough by the jetty. We then get half an hour or so jammed in by the mast - OK, you get the feeling of being under sail but as a training experience it's useless.
As sailing, for AR fans, is apparently such a life-enhancing experience, you might think that TARS should do more to encourage sail training. The problem, of course, is available water. But Midland Region has far more sailing water than you might think. Eg there is a sailing club near Aylesbury. And there are plenty more. (There is also, or was, a TARS Midland Sailing Day every August at the Cotswold Sailing Club)
Keep banging the drum about this, John! Nag your Regional Committee!
