Andrew's beaten me to it with his answer. One of the virtues of the rig is its simplicity. The inefficiency that exists seems actually to make surprisingly little difference to performance (although no-one would call this a high-performance rig in any case.) I've used this rig quite successfully in sailing a kayak, where another of its virtues -- the short length and easy rigging of the spars, making the whole rig both stowable and riggable at sea from within the boat -- is particularly important.

This disadvantage you mention is shared with the sprit rig formerly used on Thames barges (but not on Sir Garnet,) which is the rig I use on my 15' dinghy Aileen Louisa.
