Both authors, also, could write about technical matters such that they could be readily understood -- which I've always thought is another mark of a great writer.

I've read every book Shute wrote (I think,) and enjoyed all of them. I'm particularly impressed, though, with his Australian novels, all of which, believe me, are absolutely true to life. He clearly loved Australia, and indeed lived the latter part of his life in Mornington about a half-hour's drive from here. His daughter, Felicity, lived on there after his death, but, alas, no Norway is now listed in the local telephone directory.
