However, the mainstream theory is that he was killed in WWI. This is
just about reconcilable with the idea (apparently present in S&A) that
Peggy is about the same age as John, but probably not with the idea
(apparently present in most of the other books) that she is younger
than Susan and not much older than Dorothea. Of course, he could have
died after the war but as a result of the war.
