Another strong recommendation of AR's that I wish I'd read when I was first reading the S&A series is E.F. Knight's Falcon on the Baltic, which is full of good humour and a young man's enthusiasm for sailing and the sea. And if you can't find a 2nd-hand copy, all you have to do is to copy it down from the Arthur Ransome web-site.
