Sorry, patch on the leech. I maintain that that's an extremely unlikely place for them to have torn the sail in the wreck. I don't think that much credence should be placed on the non-visibility of the patch in Swallows and Amazons as

  1. The Ransome illustrations for the first three books were not done at the time of writing
  2. The sail in "The Start of the Voyage", at least in my copy of SA, is black - any patch wouldn't be visible
  3. The sail in "There Was A Bang" is too small for the patch to show as other than a slight thickening of an ink line

Most reinforcing patches I've seen on sails are applied to both sides, not just one. Presumably this is because it's just as "easy" to sew through three layers of heavy material as two, and it'll provide that additional protection.
