As part of our research into local food for free (inspired by catching fish and eels in the stories), we would like to know more about eating sea weed of which there is a plentyfull supply along our local coast. Does anyone know what type of seaweed is used for making traditional Welsh Laverbread, and how it is made. Strangely, although Laverbread can be bought in Cardiff, we have never seen here in North Wales, but we understand that the sea weed used is actually derived from the North Wales coast.

Can anyone report stories or recipies for using other seaweeds for cooking? It seems they are imported from Japan for culinary use, but we have plenty on our own shores.

We also collect and eat sea asparagus (sempher) from the mud flats at Forydd Bay , and sea spinach, which has lovely lush dark green leaves, and it is not bitter like normal spinach. We also love mussels, and razors if we can find them.

John & Bethany.
