Nope, have a look at the illustration of Dixon's farm by night on p 157. Dorothea is holding a light source. The light is above her hand, and must therefore be either a candle or small oil lamp. Lanterns and oil lamps were carried round houses from room to room - I am just old enough to remember houses with no electricity upstairs, and this is what was done. The Swallows were well used to small lanterns - they had them in their tents - and therefore I am convinced that the lighting methods were the same at Jackson's. If a small oil lamp has a properly fitted glass 'funnel', it can be moved from side to side quite quickly (I have just tried it!) without going out, so it could be hidden and revealed for morse purposes. And of course so could a lantern. No need to 'strike matches', Mike, although I think you are coming the raw prawn a bit there, sport.
Well, must stop now, as I wish to tell my Regional Chairman exactly what I think of the TARS Development Committee recommendations, and I won't be using morse . . .
