I have a "ice chest" which I picked up in an Auction about 10 years ago.
This chest looks like a small fridge, freezer on top, cool section below,
with two doors. It is metal lined but clad in timber. the top section is
designed to take a large block of ice, which naturally melts, draining
into a tray at the bottom. It works like a dream. While there is ice the
bottom section stayes below 10 degrees Celcius, even in a hot Australian
Summer, Winter it hovers around the 6 degree mark. This is sufficent to
keep dairy goods, meat etc for an extended time. We use it constantly
in our weekender which has no mains electricity. It's even good for the
beer, (best in the top section!!!:-)5 kilograms of crushed ice easily
lasts a weekend, Block ice even longer. It's harder to get into the
drinks though. You can just about get 10 kilo's of ice in the freezer
section.

If there is any interest I'll post some pictures.
