Having been raised in Australia during the 40's and 50's the problem of keeping food fresh was addressed by:
Coolgardie Safe mentioned above
Kerosene powered refrigerators. These became very common during the 30's and a famous name was "Silent Knight" built by Halstroms.
In the country, a sheep would be slaughted every few days and the meat was cooked while still fresh and eaten cold or reheated as a curry or minced to make into a meat loaf.
Milk was available daily if there were dairy herds and most properties kept some cows and chickens for domestic use so fresh eggs and milk was always available. Tinned condensed milk was diluted with water and made an acceptable substitute as also did milk powder when cows were off their milk or no cows were available.
When camping, I always found that cooked meat lasted about 4 days without refrigeration.
There was also dried meat and perhaps a South African TARS could tell us how to make real Pemmican or Biltong.
