Fridges can indeed be powered by gas but I am not aware that gas ones
were commoner than electric in the 1950s. The first domestic fridges
must have been earlier than the late 50s. My parents got an electric
one in 1957 and were not the first people in the district to have one.
Incidentally it was still in use 30 years later.

I would have thought that butchers, grocers etc had large (usually
electric) fridges as far back as, say, the late 1940s.
