Indeed the Common Loon and Great Northern Diver are the same bird. They feature on the Canadian one dollar coin, the 20 dollar bill and many lakes in our part of the world. A week or so ago we were up staying at a cottage on a lake near Toronto and I was "stalking" one in a little sailing boat! I got to about 20 feet away before it dived. They swim a long way underwater and catch small fish.

We also have cormorants which are quite different with longer necks and fly differently. however, both GNDs and cormorants swim with their bodies mostly submerged and only their heads and necks showing.
