Yeah, sorry about that - I was in a bad mood, but that's no excuse! You're quite right - I went on a trip on the Gondola at the height of summer and it was quiet and idyllic. Having said that I had a serious voyage on Windermere the following day and - despite finding myself rather rocked about in speed boat wakes from time to time, and feeling - like the D's - that they thought I was riding their wakes for my own amusement - I had a fantastic time on Windermere as well and saw TWO (count 'em TWO) beautiful standing-lugsail dinghies. One with a white sail and another with a tan sail; what more could you ask for?

I also had a mooch around the Esperance... A bit smaller than I pictured the houseboat (but then the Gondola's a lot bigger than I pictured the houseboat) - I think it likely he had both boats in mind, although that's always a bit of a cop out, like with the islands (I bet, judging from your Coniston fervour, that you're a Peel Island man - I'm one of that strange minority that opt for a 'mostly Ramp Holme with a peculiar air of Peel Island and its harbour...' Of course, he said it was Blake Holme - didn't he? - so these things are never straightforward!
