From rather hazy recollections from Hugh Brogan's biography, or perhaps other sources, our hero's modus operandi was to complete summaries of each chapter and after these were complete to write first drafts for whichever chapter he felt inclined. I have often wondered whether those chapter summaries exist for Coots In The North. If they do they may be able to shed light on your question. Perhaps someone who has visited the Abbot Hall Museum in Kendal or is at least a bit closer than I am in Toronto can help us both.
