You are absolutely right - probably why its a favourite with many Ransome readers.All the cast get equal time which makes the book far more real and in my opinion, better written than the others.And Susan does become a real person in it - my mistake
I love many of the other Ransome books but he breaks a cardinal rule of writing, which is that each character must push the plot forward. With some characters, it is hard to see how they contribute much considering their peripherality.
But - this is only my opinion!
