In SA Ch2, p.23-24 of 2nd ed. mother asks John "what about mattresses" to which John replies "rugs". Mother says "Not enough, unless you want to be like the lady who ran away with the wraggle-taggle gipsies and caught her death of cold". Titty points out that the song doesn't say anything re 'death of cold' but does say that she didn'y care.
Mother's reply asks "Well, what happened to Don't Care?" to which Roger replies "Came to a bad end".
Does anyone know who Dont Care was? Is the quote from a childrens' cautionary tale?
