I think that the maps in the lake books are not to scale. For example using the .25" = 100 yards Wild Cat would be about 300 yards long. Sailing time between Wild Cat and Beckfoot would be as short as ten minutes, wind dependant naturally. I always imagined it as taking at least an hour or so making the lake about 10 miles long. I'll state now that I think the distance's in the novels are as accurate as a dream sometimes A to B takes no time at all, other's it takes forever.
I like Dan's scale of "1,760 years(SIC) per mile" the best. I think the fourth dimension is probally the most important. (and maybe even a fifth and sixth)
