I had not read this that way before and could be persuaded to see the remark in this light. Could you supply some other 'later' indications that Nancy likes John?

No, I cant! I dont have any books with me here. Ther is a very good article by Dave Sewart, I think, in Mixed Moss, called "Sex on the quarter deck" [rather a raucous title] which gives later details of what he saw as a blossoming John/Nancy friendship.
I am not sold on the idea yet, myself. My ARC friends here have got me thinking about Nancy and Timothy..........
