It is indeed all great fun. I appreciate your enlightening me. I very much enjoy hearing these definitions of terms largely because I’m sure my own use of words, particularly nautical terms, may not always be accurate. I occasionally post comments like the one above to check my understanding and to sniff out geographic variations in the English language.
My father, having spent some time in schooners, has a habit of calling the staysail on his 24’ cutter the “forestaysail”. That always makes me chuckle as I scramble forward to carry out a command.
