Collar studs are perfectly familiar to any male who is over about 55 and grew up in the UK. (They are no doubt familiar to females of that era as well, who often had to look for the damned things.) My father wore detached collars for work (in a bank), which needed a stud, and yes, I can remember him wearing such a collar on holiday for appearing at meals in a hotel. I too had studs, as shirts with attached collars often needed studs in those days. Holidays were a different matter for me, but a collar stud could be a prized possession for a boy, like a watch or cuff-links (we needed those as well) - a sign that you were 'grown-up'. I very much doubt if Roger on holiday wore shirts which needed studs, but he probably carried a stud round along with pen-knife, piece of string, and all the other contents of small boys' pockets. Just the thing to 'dive' for in the wash basin - he could hardly use his watch.
