Almost any felt hat, if worn for long enough, and sweated in, and sat upon, and drunk out of from pools of questionable liquid, will assume a conical shape once the band has disintegrated. My first Akubra, bought in Alice Springs, lasted for many years of outback exploration. It was finally "killed" by my son who borrowed it for a one-week school camp [hoping, no doubt, to be thought of as Indiana Jones]. I suggest that Timothy's hat had suffered all of these depredations, and was probably quite shapeless.
