Ho hum. Jim Brading's uncle knew the place, and told Commander Walker about it when offering him the use of the Goblin. The Swallows quite specifically had permission to camp there and to use the water.

Now, unless I am much mistook, Jim Brading was actually Jim Clay, son of Henry Clay, Chairman of Lloyd's (and friend of AR - see dedication) who probably knew the Eagle family, who own Horsey Island, since they also have Lloyd's connections. The farmer would have been a tenant, not too unhappy to oblige his landowner in such a small thing.

I conclude that the Swallows, and Ransome in his exploring, had special permission to camp on the island.

I have never set foot on it, in forty years of reading SW, whilst Mastodon (Skippers') Island is a nature reserve anyway.
