David, I fancy you may be right, and what we should be looking for is a pub, up a dyke, in the northern Broads, with a badly painted sign, which had already closed when the book was written, because of AR's description of it as "run down" - he would have been too tactful to say this about any existing establishment. Either that, or he invented the entire pub and adjacent dyke.

Living in the WDMTGTS - SW area, I have enjoyed tracing out those locations - the SPEEDY was an invention, in otherwise accurate descriptions.
