Also, I understand that it was the widespread burning of coal in England that made for the notorious London pea-soupers of a century ago, and that when coal was largely replaced by other fuels the fogs became less dense.

Whether pea-soupers around Memmert could have been caused through this agency though seems to be pretty doubtful.
