I remember being in a fog in North Oxford in the winter of 1956-7 walking on the pavement (sidewalk), I came to a side street (not a particularly wide one), was totally unable to see the curb on the other side, lost my sense of direction and got totally lost.

Admittedly this was not a sea fog, but fogs can be very thick.
