This mention of fog reminds me of a question I’ve been meaning to ask about the density of North Sea fogs. I regularly read Riddle of the Sands at this time every year and I am continually struck by how thick the fog appears to be when Carruthers is lurking around Memmert, spying on the enemy. It seems to be so thick that he is invisible to men walking only about 10 feet away from him.

I’ve been in some pretty thick fogs here in Maine, but nothing that would allow me to hide from someone that close to me. I do not doubt Childers’ accuracy, I am just amazed. Has anyone experienced such a thick fog? Are these ultra-thick very common on the North Sea? Must be awful for anyone suffering from claustrophobia.
