You are right, of course, in the number of fogs that advance (?), enhance the plot lines. One of the problems may be that we have read all the books, can refer to them at any time, in a rather compact time frame. This may not have been so obvious when the books were initially published, several years apart. I compare it to the repetitiveness of certain pet catch phrases used by Erle Stanley Gardner in his "Perry Mason" series that are painfully obvious when one reads several of the books close together.
