Names corrupt all the time, especialy in country areas, where signs may be rare, the locals have an accent which new arrivals mis-hear, and time twists the meanings. You can't be too pedantic unless you're planning a thesis. Authors also use little twists like this to try and disguise the book's action. Then appreciation societies enjoy unravelling the knots!
