According to my father (1903-85) when he was a boy, not so long after AR was one, vanilla ice cream was sold on the streets of London, before WW1, by "hokey cokey men", who were supposed to be Italian, and it was called "hokey cokey" (no idea why). He wanted some, and was dissuaded by being told that the hokey cokey man slept with the ice cream under his bed!
