Spas have almost disappeared in UK, though the waters are still there. Bath still has its Pump Room, but Harrogate and Tunbridge Wells are no longer destinations for those looking for a health-giving holiday. One of our Trustees lives in Strathpeffer, which was called Strathpeffer Spa some 50 years ago.
On the Continent of Europe, on the other hand, spas are still very popular: Vichy, Baden-Baden and of course Spa (in Belgium) are still thronged with visitors. It's not very long since British newspapers reported that so many Germans were taking holidays at spas at the expense of their Social Security that restrictions were being introduced.
