Nancy was was referred to as "female". She became rather indignant as such labeling, no matter how truthful that description was. I don't think that this is showing any tendency on her part to regret that was her particular gender, nor that she wishes it to be otherwise, but she just didn't want that particular description. Probably felt that other characteristics are better used in her description than just a gender specification.
