When we were there in 1988 there was a small stone building (not a cottage: more like a storage shed or an ice house) with a plaque in the wall. I have a slide, but the stone was already so weathered it is hard to read even when scanned and enlarged. In brief, it explains that the building and quay were erected in 1852 with stone from old London Bridge, concluding with the date 1176.

No doubt some local Eel can provide a more detailed account (and the whole wording of the plaque).

That was the trip when I hired a pilot from Clacton airfield to fly me (lower than he was supposed to) over Secret Water, while I leaned dangerously out of the window taking endless aerial shots. Great fun.
