one of the conundrums that might have appealed to the scientist in Ransome

As a rule-of-thumb for TarBoard appropriateness of topic, this opens out almost to infinity. It could be claimed that just about any scientific question would have been of interest to either or both Dick Callum or AR himself, even if the relevant principles were unknown in their lifetimes. We could get an awful long way from Arthur Ransome. Now it is not my website and it is not for me to define 'appropriateness' but I wonder if Ian E-N is OK about these extremely wide parameters? Maybe he is, but should we not take into account the possibility that some aspects of modern child-rearing might have appealed to the mother in Susan? Or aspects of the modern novel have appealed to the author in Dorothea? Etc etc. It seems to me that there have to be some sort of limits on our discussions but as I said, it's not my call.
