I suspect if you look at the pictures of Amazon/Mavis after the fibreglass had been stripped off but before restoration, you might consider that the wood was too damaged and mottled to be varnished.

I understand that much of Amazon's woodwork had to be replaced as it was too rotten to be restored.
I was told by Peter Freebody, one of the last traditional boat builders on the Thames, that only top quality wood is varnished everytinng else is painted unless the client requests otherwise.

As Amazon was originally built for sailing in the seas off Barrow, I wonder if she was ever varnished.
