Lovely. I've seen Great Northerns on the Irish coast, but only in their winter plumage (or transition). I did once hear a Great Northern call (unusually, outside its breeding waters). We had a red-throated diver over-winter (part of the winter anyway) in the reservoir up the road.
Funnily enough they do get wintering birds on Windermere / Coniston from time to time, so Dick might have stumbled across a Great Northern in that first winter holiday!
