The Big Six

Does anyone know who the original 'Big Six' were? Two possibilities so far:

a) There was in the 1920's in Scotland Yard a genuine 'Big Six' of famous detectives. If so, who were they?

b) The title of AR's book is a a reference to Agatha Christie's 'The Big Four' of 1927 (the title of which itself, of course, may be a reference to a genuine Big Six)
