Port and Starboard are an interesting exercise in characterisation and come into sharper focus, for me, than Tom Dudgeon who, frankly, is not much more than a necessary cipher. Their unusual domestic circumstances as twin daughters of a widower give AR a chance to try something new - and he pulls it off rather well.

The chase by wherry, motor boat and Thames barge is Ransome at the top of his form.

What a pity there was not a third Broads book.
