Dan, the obvious explanation is that in 1932, when AR went to Lowestoft "to get the background right .... which is now sketched in with blanks", the Government fishery vessel was in port, and did have reindeer horns from Lapland. They would probably be a trophy from a visit, and he thought it would make a convincing detail.
PD was mostly written on his visit to the Altounyans in Aleppo, so he had to find local colour very quickly on his return to England.
I had a quick look in Jibbooms and Bobstays, but didn't find a mention. But I expect you looked in your copy first.
