That corresponds well to 1947 being the worst winter for decades. I remember it horribly well. Just after the war, still austerity in full swing, no central heating and in my parents' Victorian London house, baths with kettles heated on the cooker. I lay on the floor drawing as close as I dared to a two bar electric fire- when there were no power cuts... My dad was on the roof with our lodger chipping ice out of the gutters and sealing the frost cracks with a paraffin blow lamp and roofing pitch.

The following year I was given my first AR book; my mum read SD to me. I still have the book on the shelf next to me as I type, in the full row of Cape Greens. Plus the blue of Racundra.
