Hhmmmm.... I always told my students to never use highlighter to mark their texts, because what they thought was important reading the first time through, and highlighted, would later seem unimportant and they wouldn't then be able to erase the highlighting. (I've seen some books where so much of the book was highlighted by four or more different sets of highlighting made at different readings, that many pages were completely rainbow-coloured and could hardly be read at all.)

My own bookmarking is generally restricted to sidelining a para (or very occasionally underlining a Really Important Sentence), but always in pencil that can be erased later.

What practice do others follow?
