I think this has been remarked upon already but perhaps not in this thread. Ransome appears to have employed assemblage but not invention in creating his places; that is, each is a collage of existing elements found somewhere, rather than parts being pure invention (at least, elements having to do with terrain, geographical features and so forth). So there seems to be reason for Mike Field to maintain hope for the Swallowdale gully.
